Abstract:
Melissa officinalis L. is one of the edible and medicinal plants, it is known as lemon balm because of its lemon like fragrance. Reviewing the available literature, only two studies could be traced concerning the microscopical features of M. officinalis. Accordingly, the present study examines various standardized parameters including the morphological and histological characters of the leaf of M. officinalis which could be helpful in authentication of the plant. The leaf is microscopically characterized by the presence of anomocytic stomata, glandular hairs such as labiaceous and capitate hairs as well as different types of non-glandular hairs. Additionally, calcium oxalate crystals were absent.
