Abstract:
Aloe buettneri was evaluated to confirm its hypoglycemic activity. The presence of quinone which seem to leave the hypoglycemic activity. Lyophilisate of
A. buettneri leaf (L
A) causes hypoglycemia only 2 h after its administration and is linked to the presence of quinone. Glycemia reduction with LA was significantly higher than that of Glibenclamide, the control. Glibenclamide and LA negatively affects blood glucose in the mice by decreasing it continuously over time. However, LA exhibited significant hypoglycemic activity in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic mice. L
A has a greater hypoglycemic potential than Glibenclamide, a pharmaceutical drug used in the treatment of diabetes.
A. buettneri is then a potential good hypoglycemic drug because it may provide clues for the development of new and better oral drugs for treatment of diabetes mellitus in the context of improved traditional medicines.
