Abstract:
Currently, there is a need and demand for the development of safe, cheap and effective topical herbal formulation as sunscreen. With this in mind, present investigation was undertaken mainly to evaluate sun protective activity of
M. indica ver “
Willard”
in vitro using UV spectroscopic technique and Mansur equation. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) was evaluated for methanolic leaf extract having concentration of 2.0 mg/mL and for the methanol soluble fraction of Dermatone® (Concentration: 2.0 mg/mL), as the reference agent. The anti-oxidant activity of methanolic leaf extract of
M. indica ver “
Willard” was measured
in vitro using standard procedures. The results showed that the leaf extract has high SPF value of 38.67 whilst Dermatone® showed a SPF value of 33.76. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, tanins, terpenoids, phenols, glycosides, flavonoids and saponins. The methanolic leaf extract of
M. indica ver “
Willard” exhibited a marked anti-oxidant activity.
