Purpose: Ayurveda has elaborately explained cosmetology in various Samhitas. Acharya Sushrut has described Sarivadi Gana as Dahashamak in Sutrasthan Dravyasangrahaniya Adhyaya. Among the dravyas explained in Sarivadi Gana, Sariva, Ushir, Shweta Chandan, Rakta Chandan, Yashtimadhu, Padmak have Varnya property. In Cosmetic Formulations, Lotions have high spreadability, good absorption rate and have long stability on skin. Therefore, an attempt has been made to formulate a lotion of Sarivadi Gana, as a coolant and complexion enhancer.
Method: The preparation of Sarivadi lotion was carried out in two phases namely Oil phase and Water phase.
1. Oil phase: Corse powders of Shweta Chandan, Rakta Chandan, Padmak and Yashtimadhu were soaked overnight in 16 times water and reduced to 1/8th to obtain Kwath. Coconut oil, Kalka of same dravyas and above prepared Kwath were heated till the presentation of Taila siddhi lakshan to obtain Siddha taila.
2. Water phase: Coarse powders of Sariva and Ushir were immersed in hot water to obtain Phant. Later Emulsifying wax was melted into Phant. Then the above Siddha taila was added and stirred. Later Shea butter, EDTA, Stearic acid, DMDM hydantoin were added and the mixture was blended vigorously. Later Ushir essential oil and Padmak water base fragrance were added to obtain Sarivadi lotion.
Result: Analytical study of Sarivadi lotion included Organoleptic parameters like Shabda, Sparsha, Rupa, Ras and Gandha and Physico- chemical tests such as pH, moisture content and Skin irritation test. Sarivadi lotion was light cream in colour and showed good spreadability and absorption over skin. The pH was 5 which is acceptable for dermal application.
Conclusion: The drugs in Sarivadi Gana have Sheeta veerya so application of Sarivadi lotion over skin exhibited coolant effect. Also further screening will evaluate its efficacy.
