In-vitro screening was carried out by following the poisoned food technique to evaluate the inhibitory activities of selected fungicides and essential oils on the growth of Diaporthe phaseolorum, the causative agent of dieback disease of Melia dubia. The evaluated fungicides include Carbendazim, Thiophenate methyl, Metaxyl+ Mancozeb, Hexaconazole and Cymoxanil, essential oils such as Lemongrass, thyme, Citronella, Peppermint and Clove. The fungal growth was completely inhibited at 2ppm concentration of Carbendazim and 2.5 ppm of Thiophenate methyl and Metaxyl+ Mancozeb. Meanwhile, Clove oil was effective even at low concentration (2ppm) and Lemon grass, Citronella were effective at 8ppm respectively. Linear growth of tested fungi decreased significantly with increase in the concentrations of fungicides and essential oils tested. The obtained results showed that fungicides are best in reducing the growth of D. phaseolorum In vitro. Whereas, essential oils can be used as an alternatives to chemical fungicides for inhibiting the growth in-vitro.
