A review on Ixora coccinea: Uses, properties and pharmacological studies

Abstract:

Natural products and traditional medicines are of great importance. Medicinal plants have been used basically in all cultures as a source of medicine. Ixora has a long history of being used to treat a wide range of conditions, including cancer, hepatic disorders, microbial infections, antioxidants, pain, and inflammation. Ixora coccinea belongs to the family Rubiaceae, which is typically known as Jungle of geranium. It is an evergreen shrub which is habituated in India. Several kinds of chemicals, including triterpenoids, aromatic acrid oils, tannins, saponins, carbohydrates, fatty acids, flavanoids, and sterols, are found in the genus Ixora. This plant has been shown through pharmacological research to have antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, gastro protective, anti-nociceptive, anti-mutagenic, anti-diarrheal, antioxidant, and chemo-preventive properties. Ixora coccinea are expected to have applications in biomedical, cosmetic industries, Biotechnology, sensors, medical, catalysis, optical device, coatings, drug delivery and water remediation. This review focuses on the traditional and pharmacological uses of Ixora coccinea.
