Introduction: Acute gastroenteritis is an infectious disease of the alimentary tract which may be caused by one or more bacterial, viral or protozoal pathogens producing damage to the mucosa either structural or functional of variable extent and severity. In India, the prevalence of diarrhoea is higher in rural areas (7.7%) than in urban areas (6.2%). In Ayurveda Diarrhoea is correlated with Atisaar. Yogratnakar has described Rasanjanadi Churna with Tandulodak and Honey for the treatment of Raktatisaar which is an exacerbated stage of Pittatisaar. Some of the contents of Rasanjanadi Churna have shown antidiarrheal and antibacterial activity.
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of Rasanjanadi Churna on Gastrointestinal Bacteria like Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia Coli through In vitro Study.
Method: Rasanjanadi Churna was prepared according to the Standard procedure given in the classical text Yogratnakar- Raktatisaar Adhikar. The study drug has Anupana Tandulodak and Honey. So, the In vitro study was carried out on 2 Samples such as Sample 1 consisted of Rasanjanadi Churna and Sample 2 consisted of Rasanjanadi Churna with Tandulodak and Honey. Both the Samples were studied for Antibacterial Activity and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration on 3 types of bacteria namely Escherichia Coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium.
Observation: Sample 1 showed anti- bacterial activity as zone of inhibition for E. coli as 9 mm, S. aureus as 10 mm, S. typhi as 9 mm. Sample 2 showed anti- bacterial activity as zone of inhibition for E. Coli as 20 mm, S. aureus as 28 mm and S. typhi as 22 mm. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration for Sample 1 against E. coli was 12.5%, S. aureus was 25% and S. typhi was 12.5%. The MIC for Sample 2 E. Coli was 6.25, S. aureus was 3.125 and S. typhi was 6.25.
Conclusion: The antibacterial assay was performed on the samples against the test organism Coli, S. aureus, S. typhi. Sample 1 showed mild activity whereas Sample 2 shows prominent activity against test organisms. The MIC was performed for given samples against the test organism E. coli, S. aureus, S. typhi. Notable activities were observed in all samples for MIC. Rasanjanadi Churna with Tandulodak and Honey showed significant Anti- bacterial activity against E. coli, S. aureus and S. typhi.
