Due to advent of severe side effects of molecular medicines and lack of affordability by the high costs of these medicines, there is an urgent need to understand the action of Ayurvedic and other forms of naturally aligned medicines to bring them to the mainstream of medicinal practices. There has been significant progress in this regard and more reports being made recently on the potential of Ayurvedic medications. The present study is a step in this direction, which deals with the detailed review of pharmacological properties and benefits of the herbal components of a potential Ayurvedic oil, known as Eladi Thailam. The fact that this ancient oil is still widely manufactured and prescribed by Ayurvedic practitioners, highlights the cultural importance of the formulation to the rich ethnopharmacological tradition of Indian medicine.
