Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) belongs to family Malvaceae. It is one of the medicinal plants used therapeutically since ancient time. It has potentially for management of many diseases. The roots, flowers and seeds of marshmallow are used as medicament. According to Unani texts the main action of Khatmi (Marshmallow) are demulcent, expectorant, defragment, concoctive, astringent, detergent, and repellent. The scientifically proven/ reported pharmacological activities are antiviral, anti-tumor, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant, hepatoprotective, ulcer protective and also used in cough, irritation of throat and gastric inflammation etc.
Active chemical constituent present in marshmallow are: alkaloid, terpinoids, tannins, flavonoids, mucilage, polysaccharides, phytosterols, fatty acids hydroxybenzoic acid, glycosides and additionally the leaves contain coumarin scopolectin.
