Abstract:

Healing a wound is a biological process comprising several phenomena working together. It requires the integration of several types of cells, signaling pathways, and extracellular matrix components. Newer wound care materials are needed to help in tissue regeneration while trying to minimize infection and other complications. From many, Chitosan, a biopolymer obtained from chitin, fatally appears to take the lead as it possesses excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, hemostatic action, and antimicrobial activity. To achieve that goal, this review intends to show the structure and composition and sources of Chitosan and how it promotes easy wound healing. It further investigates the use of Chitosan-based wound sealants intended to provide an extracellular matrix like environment that enhances tissue repair with minimal scarring. Such sealants are amenable to modification by therapeutic agents for controlled drug delivery at the wound site. While discussing the disadvantages of traditional wound care methods, it becomes essential to detail moisture-retaining chitosan, non-toxic degradation products, and the capability to enhance cell proliferation. Moreover, this paper assesses recent advances in chitosan-based nanocomposites, electrospun nanofibers, and hydrogels which prove the miraculous ability of this biopolymer towards modern wound care.
