This review of the plant Diospyros mespiliformis is part of an approach aimed at making the most of our natural substances. It focuses on the essentials of traditional medicine and further studies of the plant. It is based on two major themes which highlight the obvious importance of the plant. These are the ethnopharmacology of the plant and phytochemical studies of the species, i.e. the chemical composition and biological activities of extracts. Ethnopharmacology reveals that Diospyros mespilformis is used in its various parts in the traditional medicine of several peoples on the continent. The plant is most often used for its ability to combat coughs, dysentery, diarrhea, menorrhagia, toothache, gingivitis, fungal skin infections, ulcers, fever, pneumonia, syphilis, leprosy and yaws.
