Abstract:

Justicia flava is a plant widely used in traditional medicine and has several pharmacological properties. Seventy (70) rats were divided into 7 groups of 10 animals and were treated daily for 28 days. The control group received distilled water at 10 mL/kg bw orally. Groups 2 to 5 were gavaged with EAJf at the respective doses of 125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg bw and groups 6 and 7 were added as satellite groups. These satellite groups continued the test two weeks after the 28 days. The relative liver weight of rats treated with EAJf at the dose of 1000 mg/kg bw showed a significant increase (p˂ 0.05) compared to that of rats in the control group. In terms of ASAT levels, oral administration of EAJf at doses of 125 and 250 mg/kg bw did not vary significantly compared to that of control rats. Administration of EAJf at doses of 500 and 1000 mg/kg bw caused a significant increase (p< 0.001). ALAT and conjugated bilirubin levels in rats treated with EAJf at 1000 mg/kg bw caused a significant increase (p< 0.001) compared to that of control rats. Alkaline phosphatase levels in rats receiving the extract at doses of 250; 500 and 1000 mg/kg bw increased significantly (p< 0.001) compared to control rats. But fourteen (14) days after the end of the experiment, no significant variation in the values of these parameters in the groups treated with EAJf is recorded compared to those of the different control group. After 28 days of treatment with EAJf, the histological sections of the liver of the treated rats show some abnormalities with the doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg bw. Fourteen (14) days after the end of the different treatments, the abnormalities observed at the end of the 28th day of treatment at the level of the liver histology are no longer observed. Therefore, the aqueous extract of Justicia flava in sub-acute administration is not toxic and presents some potential but reversible toxic effects on the liver.
