Biophytum reinwardtii looks like a miniature palm tree and is native to India. Plants are often found in humid areas (mostly plains) of tropical Africa, Asia and India, usually under the shade of trees and shrubs, grasslands, open scrub, at low and medium altitudes. There were very few reports on the effectiveness of these plants to protect the liver, which motivated me to undertake this task. In addition, we used a lycopene extract together with a plant extract because lycopene has already been shown to be an antioxidant. In this study, we focus on the protective role of Biophytum reinwardtii along with lycopene in carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity. The main cause of liver toxicity is increased oxidative stress. Plants that have antioxidant properties due to flavonoids, tannins and other phytochemicals, so plants based on this property are used to treat hepatotoxicity. Plants are always a desirable source of medicine.
Results: The methanolic extract of Biophytum reinwardtii whole plant (200mg/kg) and methanolic extract of Biophytum reinwardtii whole plant in combination with lycopene (50mg/kg) significantly decreases the levels of liver markers like SGOT, SGPT, ALP, TG and total cholesterol and increases the levels of SOD, catalase, GSH and decrease levels of MDA when compared to CCl4 treated animals. Histopathological studies show MEBR and Lycopene ameliorates the CCl4 induced necrosis of liver.
Conclusion: Based on the results the methanolic extract of Biophytum reinwardtii whole plant (200mg/kg) and methanolic extract of Biophytum reinwardtii whole plant in combination with lycopene (50mg/kg) significantly protect the CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity.
