Abstract:
Sesame being an underutilized oilseed crop is one of the ancient crop domesticated in Africa and India. The crop being the queen of oilseeds is considered to be unexplored with its already reported natural variability. With this view this study was undertaken to study the combining ability of the hundred testers collected from different regions of India. The hundred in brads as testers were crossed to two elite lines as females (CO 1 and TMV 5) obtained from Tamil Nadu. The two hundred crosses were evaluated for eleven yield attributing traits in sesame. Among the two hundred hybrids, the crosses; TMV 5 x Bardur local (B), TMV 5 x MT-10-23-3, TMV 5 x shekar and TMV 5 x PKVNT 11 were found to perform superior with their highest mean and significant sca effects. The parental line TMV 5 had exhibited good general combining ability for seed yield and early maturation for the hundred crosses. Hence this line could be adopted in other breeding programs to ponder yield favourable genes in sesame. Among the testers that were collected from different regions the entries viz., MT-10-23-3, Bardur local (B), RT 202 and PT 1 showed the highest significant positive gca effects for yield and its componential traits. The lines TMV 5, Amrit and Usha were found to be early flowering types and could be utilized in breeding for higher yield and early maturing types in sesame. Also among the hundred lines the in breds China and LT 8 were found to be monostem in nature with higher capsule length and number of seeds per capsule. Hence these lines could be used as elite lines in breeding of monostem cultivars. The preponderance of non-additive gene action for all the traits were observed and this portrayed the exploitation of heterosis breeding in sesame. This study encountered the maximum variability in the combining patterns of the 102 parental lines and their hybrids and the crosses, TMV 5 x Bardur local (B), TMV 5 x MT-10-23-3, TMV 5 x shekar and TMV 5 x PKVNT 11 could be tested in other multi-locational trials for their elite performances to facilitate hybrid breeding in sesame.
