Physico-chemical characteristics of surface and sub-surface soils of selected black soil type in Haveri District, Karnataka

Abstract:
The representative twenty samples of black soil type spreading over seven taluks of Haveri district of Karnataka were studied for selected physico-chemical properties during 2016-17 at UAS, Dharwad. The experimental data related to pH of the black soils varied from 7.00 to 7.85 in surface and 7.02 to 7.80 in sub-surface. The EC of the black soils varied from 0.22 to 0.35 dS m-1 in surface and 0.25 to 0.36 dS m-1 in sub-surface. Organic carbon was more in Hangal soil (7.98 g kg-1) and less in Karadagi soils (3.65 g kg-1) in surface samples and that of sub-surface layer highest value recorded in Hangal soil (6.45 g kg-1) and lowest in Karadagi soil (3.65 g kg-1). The surface samples were clay loam to clay in texture. The sub-surface samples were clay in texture. The average CEC value of sub-surface samples was high compared to surface layers. The black soil EPP ranged from 4.70 to 12.36 per cent in surface soils and that of sub-surface soils varied from 3.44 to 9.02 per cent. The EPP of surface layer was higher than the sub-surface depth. The PAR of black soils in surface soils ranged from 1.00 to 1.38 and that of sub-surface soil varied from 0.77 to 2.40. Irrespective of the soil type studied, the sub-surface soils recorded lower PAR values compared to surface samples. The higher values of exchangeable cations in black soils at surface depth may be due to fact that these soils provide high clay per cent with more surface area and exchange sites. The available potassium on an average obtained highest in both the depths (529.53 kg ha-1 and 327.04 kg ha-1 in surface and sub-surface depths, respectively). The surface samples recorded high available potassium compared to sub-surface layer. Thus, it is important to study surface and sub-surface characteristics of soils for effective fertiliser recommendations, nutrient and crop management strategies.
