4-(4-chlorophenyl) pyridine an antimicrobial compound of plant origin

The solvent plant extracts of Terminalia chebula
, Simarouba glauca
and Bixa orellana
showed inhibitory effect when tested against the Xanthomonads by paper disc method. The active fraction of the solvent extracts was separated using thin layer chromatography. Two major peaks on Gas chromatography mass spectroscopy were identified as 4-(4-chlorophenyl) pyridine and phthalic acid respectively. Commercially available compounds of 4-(4-chlorophenyl) pyridine and phthalic acid when tested against the bacteria Clostridium perfringens
and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
, and the fungus Aspergillus niger
, showed that the compound only 4-(4-chlorophenyl) pyridine possess the antimicrobial property against bacteria well as fungi.
