Abstract:
Twenty one plus trees of Mahaneem (
Ailanthus excelsa Roxb.) were selected through intensive survey from Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The selection was made on phenotypic assessment of desirable characters of economic interest such as stem straightness, self-pruning ability; clear bole height, low branching habit, disease resistance, etc. Ample genetic variation was observed for field emergence, seedling height, shoot length, root length, basal diameter and number of branches. The progeny (AE19) of the plus tree from Palsana, Rajasthan was observed to have maximum seedling height, shoot length and seedling dry weight i.e. 56.2 cm, 42.43 cm and 2.42 g, respectively. However, the highest value for number of branches/seedling (9.0) was observed in progeny (AE12) from Shiwani, Haryana. The field emergence was recorded maximum in progenies (AE08) from Danodh, Haryana. The findings of oresent study may be helpful in finding candidate plus tree in a scientific manner.
