Abstract:
The present experiment was undertaken entitled studies of gamma irradiation on vegetative and floral characters of gladiolus. The experiment was carried out at Floriculture Research Farm, Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishvidyalaya, Raipur, India during winter of 2018-2019. To conduct field experiment five cultivars of gladiolus namely American Beauty (V1), Dull Queen (V2), Saffron (V3), Candy Man (V4) and Summer Sunshine (V5) were irradiated with different doses (0, 15, 25, 35, 45 and 55 Gy) of gamma rays from 60Co source and planted under open field condition in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with factorial concept. Each treatment was replicated thrice. Plants treated with higher doses (45 Gy and 55 Gy) showed deleterious effect of ionising radiations although at lowest dose (15 Gy and 25 Gy) plants were not affected much. Minimum number of days taken to sprouting (12.03 days), number of days taken to spike initiation (67.75 days) and maximum plant height observed in the control treatment and at par to the gamma rays dose at 15 Gy. The significant effect of maximum number of tillers per corm (2.33) and number of leaves per plant (12.88) recorded in irradiation dose at 25 Gy. Flower diameter (78.45 mm) and number of florets (1.86) was slightly increased at 15 Gy treatment as compare to untreated plants. Maximum plant height, number of florets per spike and flower diameter was recorded in the interaction of variety Candy Man with gamma ray dose at 15 Gy and 25 Gy, respectively. Homeotic mutants were isolated from all the varieties at 35, 45 and 55 Gy.
