Morphological characterization of avocado (Persea americana Mill.) accessions explored from hill zone taluks of Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka state

Abstract:
Exploration was carried out in the Western Ghat region of Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka. The thirty accessions were explored and characterized based on IPGRI descriptors of avocado for 26 qualitative traits (Tree, leaf, fruit and seed characteristics). A wide variation was observed for all the traits studied except ridges on fruit, crotch angle of leaf petiole, pedicel position and fruit apex position. Predominantly pyramidal tree shape was observed as compared to obovate, circular, rectangular and obovate. Majority of the accessions exhibited very rough trunk surface with acute type of extensive branching pattern and most of the accessions had green colour leaves with oval, acute base, intermediate apex and undulate type of leaf margin. Maximum accessions exhibited sparse type pubescence on both under and the upper surface of the leaf. Among the accessions explored most of the accessions had narrowly obovate shaped fruit with light green colour, depressed base and rounded apex. Conical shaped with centrally positioned pedicel on the fruit was maximum. This suggested high diversity which would aid in genetic resources management and conservation, as well as utilization in the future breeding programme.
