Gardenia jasminoides, a potent medicinal plant belonging to the family Rubiaceae, is native to China and has been used since ancient times. It is an ornamental herb known for its fragrant white flowers and is cultivated both for its aromatic appeal and medicinal properties. In China, it is commonly used as a natural source of yellow dye. It has been a staple in traditional Chinese medicine, especially since the discovery of its biological activities in recent years. Recent studies have shown that its extracts or active components play important roles in combating oxidative stress, inflammation, liver damage, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and tumors. This review aims to provide new insights into the ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, and pharmacological applications of Gardenia jasminoides.
