Studies on variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis for seed yield in buckwheat (<em>Fagopyrum esculentum </em>Moench) germplasm

A study was undertaken to estimate the genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis of yield and yield contributing traits in thirty diverse germplasm line of buckwheat including four check varieties <em>i.e.</em> PRB-1, Himpriya, VL-7 and Shimla-B1 grown in Randomized Block Design with three replications at Research Farm of Department of Crop Improvement, V.C.S.G. Uttarakhand University of Horticulture and Forestry, College of Forestry, Ranichauri, Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, during <em>kharif </em>season 2013. The analysis of variance indicated that the treatments were highly significant for all the traits. Genotypic and phenotypic variance was high in plant height ensued by days to 50% flowering. Large value of phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) were found for 100-seed weight. The maximum heritability in broad sense was realized for days to 50% flowering and high value of genetic advance mean recorded for seed yield per plant. The genotypic correlation was generally similar in nature and higher in magnitude than corresponding phenotypic correlation coefficient. Seed yield per plant was positively correlated with days to maturity, plant height, number of primary branches per plant and 100-seed weight. Path coefficient analysis indicated that days to maturity, plant height, number of primary branches per plant and 100-seed weight showed positive direct effect to seed yield per plant. It is suggested that these characters can be considered as selection criteria in improving the seed yield of buckwheat germplasm.
